Bristol commenced to be a town over the Gloucestershire aspect with the Avon, but as it grew it prolonged over the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be separate with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it ought to be a county by alone".[50]
